Introduction
The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control and its subordinate offices were established with the objective of performing promotional and regulatory roles to protect consumers’ health from harm and to maintain the hygiene and quality of food products. Along with changes in the country’s political structure, the department and its subordinate offices have also been expanding themselves. As a result, in accordance with the federal structure, a Food Technology and Quality Control Division Office was established in Surkhet, the capital of Karnali Province. Through this office, the general public of Dailekh, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Rukum (West), Dolpa, and Humla districts received direct services.
The former Food Technology and Quality Control Division Office, Surkhet, which was established on Bhadra 9, 2075 B.S., had a working area covering Rukum West, Jajarkot, Dolpa, Dailekh, and Humla districts under Karnali Province. From Kartik 1, 2078 B.S., the former Food Technology and Quality Control Division Office was upgraded to a Food Technology and Quality Control Office with a laboratory and has been carrying out its work accordingly, and the working area of the office now includes 10 districts of Karnali Province: Surkhet, Salyan, Rukum West, Jajarkot, Dolpa, Dailekh, Mugu, Kalikot, Jumla, and Humla. Under this office, the only division office, the Food Technology and Quality Control Division Office, Jumla, has a working area covering Jumla, Kalikot, and Mugu.
This office has been carrying out food hygiene and quality–related activities in the 10 districts of Karnali Province within its working area. As far as possible, the office has been conducting monitoring, inspections, and programs within its working area and has been working to enhance awareness among various industrialists, businesspersons, and consumers. This office has been regularly carrying out inspection and monitoring of food and feed industries in Karnali Province within its designated working area, recommending registration of new food/feed industries, and regularly issuing and renewing food/feed licenses (permits) to food/feed industries for the production of food/feed products.
